What Is the Zombie Hug Trend? Every Name, Origin and Timeline
The zombie hug trend, also called the AI zombie love story, explained: every name it goes by, where it started, a dated timeline, and how people make it.

Short answer: The zombie hug trend is a short AI video in which one person has turned into a zombie, the one who loves them takes aim but can't go through with it and opens their arms instead, and the hug jumps to a happy memory of the two of them before everything changed.
If you've seen it but couldn't name it, that's normal. The same video circulates under at least half a dozen names, and the story of where it started depends on who you ask. This guide puts the names, the origin claims and the dates in one place, with sources for each.

Every name people use for it
Because the trend spread across apps and languages at once, people describe it in different ways. These all refer to the same format:
- Zombie love story. One of the most common English names, and also an older movie phrase (see Zombie Love Story Movies).
- Zombie hug or AI zombie hug. Named after the moment the zombie runs into the survivor's arms.
- AI zombie trend or zombie AI trend. The generic name used in many tutorials.
- Zombie couple video or AI zombie couple. Used when the two people are a couple.
- Zombie match cut. A descriptive name some creators and tools use, after the editing trick that jumps from the hug to the same hug in a sunny memory.
- Zombie girlfriend / zombie boyfriend AI. How people describe the clip when they search for it. The story itself works for any couple: a man and a woman, two women, two men.
- "CHOICE". The title of the AI short film several sources credit as the original.
- CapCut template names. Competitor guides list CapCut templates called "My Beloved Zombie" and "Couple Zombie AI". We haven't checked these inside the app, and template availability can differ by region.
- In Spanish: "historia de amor zombie" or "trend del zombie". Peru21 covered it under the headline "¿Cómo hago el trend de la historia de amor zombie con IA?"
The five beats of the story
Most of the widely shared versions follow the same structure:
- The setting. A cold, abandoned place: a cabin, an empty street, a ruined city.
- The standoff. One person has turned, with pale or grey skin and clouded eyes. The other takes aim, crying.
- The choice. The survivor can't go through with it. They lower their aim and open their arms.
- The hug. The zombie runs toward them, and instead of an attack, it's an embrace.
- The memory. A hard cut to a warm, sunlit memory of the same two people, healthy and happy, often in the same pose so the hug feels continuous.
The emotional impact comes from the contrast between beats 2 and 5, which is why many versions keep the horror light and skip the gore. Some versions swap the hard cut for a white flash, which is how ours moves into the memory.
Where it started: what we can and can't confirm
Several sources tell a consistent story, but we couldn't verify the original Instagram posts ourselves, so treat the details below as reported rather than confirmed.
- The "CHOICE" claim. PoloX and Seadanse both say the version most people copy is "CHOICE", an AI short film posted on Instagram on September 15, 2026 by Aytech Ashkhamakhov (@techmaf). Seadanse reports it reached about 249,000 likes and 5,408 comments.
- Earlier zombie love stories. Seadanse and PoloX also mention an earlier AI zombie love story, "Wherever You Go", posted by @asrith_prakash on August 14, 2026. The idea was already around before "CHOICE" set the format.
- The repost that popularized it in English. PoloX and aizombietrend.com both point to a September 26 Instagram Reel by @damienstraker, credited in its caption to @techmaf.
- A note of caution. aizombietrend.com, writing in Portuguese, says it couldn't find @techmaf's original post, and describes him as a Russian actor and AI creator. aivideotrend.net, meanwhile, says the earliest version it could trace was a TikTok posted by a German account on September 27, 2026. The exact first post is still uncertain.

These figures come from third-party sites citing Google Trends and platform counts. We haven't checked them against the raw data.
Zombie hug video vs. zombie face filter
People often confuse the two. A zombie filter changes how one face looks in a photo or live video. The zombie hug trend is a short story with two people, a setting, a choice and a memory. If you're after the emotional version, the cut to the happy memory is something a filter can't give you.
How people make it now
There are two routes:
- A dedicated two-photo generator. You upload one photo of each person, and the tool builds the full story for you. No prompt writing or editing. Ours, for example, runs 15–16 seconds: a zombie scene of about 10 seconds, a white flash, then a memory of about 6 seconds.
- The do-it-yourself route. Creators generate the cold scene and the warm memory separately with an AI video tool that accepts reference photos, then join them with a hard cut in an editing app such as CapCut. It gives more control but takes longer. To see what a prompt for this story has to cover, read how a zombie love story prompt is written.
Whichever you choose, decide first who plays the survivor and who plays the zombie. Our guide explains how: Who Becomes the Zombie?. When you're ready to post, follow How to Do the Zombie Love Story Trend on TikTok and Reels.
Make yours from two photos
Our generator is built around this story. Upload two photos of two different people: Photo 1 is the survivor, and Photo 2 is the one who turns zombie. Then choose a story: Cabin Romance, which flashes from a cabin to the two of you standing in a sunset wheat field, or Carnival at Night, our original scene in an abandoned amusement park with a rusty carousel and a slowly turning Ferris wheel, which flashes to a hug. Each video runs 15–16 seconds: a zombie scene of about 10 seconds, a white flash, then a memory of about 6 seconds. It's vertical 9:16, 480p, with sound effects, no watermark and nothing gory. Credits cost $4.99 for one video, $9.99 for three and $14.99 for five (about $3 a video). If a generation fails, the credit is returned automatically. Start here.
FAQ
What is the zombie hug trend called? It goes by many names: zombie love story, zombie hug, AI zombie trend, zombie couple video and zombie match cut. They all describe the same video.
Who started the AI zombie trend? Several sources, including PoloX and Seadanse, credit the AI short film "CHOICE" by Aytech Ashkhamakhov (@techmaf), posted on Instagram on September 15, 2026. At least one guide says it couldn't find the original post, so the exact origin isn't fully confirmed.
When did the zombie love story trend start? It took off in late September 2026. According to ZOOOP and ai-zombie.com, worldwide searches peaked on October 4, 2026.
Is the zombie hug video from a movie? No. It's an AI-made short format, though it echoes zombie romance films like Warm Bodies (2013).
Why does the video cut to a field or a beach? That's the match cut: the hug in the zombie scene jumps to the same hug in a happy memory, which is what makes the clip emotional. In our two stories, the memory is a sunset wheat field (Cabin Romance) or a hug (Carnival at Night).
